General music in elementary school provides students with experiences in singing, instrument play and movement. Students gain understanding in the elements of music. They also gain vocal and instrumental skills through instruments such as percussion and recorders.
•Instrumental music instruction is a part of the core curriculum in the sixth grade in the Tulsa Public School District. During the first year, students study tone production, instrument fingerings, rhythms, instrument care, and basic musical terms. Performance skills on simple melodies are developed and students are given several opportunities to perform in various concerts and band competitions.
•In addition to further development of their basic fundamental skills, these bands offer a variety of performance opportunities as the students progress into the seventh and eighth grade. These include concerts, pep rallies, football games and various contests. Students are also encouraged to participate in individual events such as the Metro Honor Middle School Band tryouts and Metro Honor Middle School Jazz Band tryouts.
Students may enter into band programs beginning in 6th grade at the following schools:
Byrd, Carver, Cleveland, Clinton, Edison, Foster, Gilcrease, Hamilton, Lewis and CLark, Madison, Nimitz, Thoreau, Whitney and Wilson
•This performing ensemble is open to any middle school student wishing to play a stringed orchestra instrument—violin, viola, cello, or bass.
•Each student gains a basic understanding and appreciation for classical music through lessons in basic theory, history, and playing technique.
•Emphasis is on basic playing and listening skills to foster each student’s capacity for self-expression in playing a string instrument (in a group as well as alone).
•Students interested in beginning or continuing string study at the middle school level may do so at:
Byrd, Carver, Clinton, Edison, Madison, Wilson
Strengthening vocal music at our Middle Schools is a long-term and high priority goal. At schools where vocal music is a part of the curriculum, students have the opportunity to be exposed to great choral music while strengthening their skills as musicians.

•Band studies at the high school level include Marching, Symphonic, Concert and Jazz Ensembles. These ensembles have a variety of performance opportunities including concerts, community performances, football games, pep rallies, athletic events, and state-wide competitions.
•Students are also encouraged to participate in individual activities such as OSSAA Solo & Ensemble Contest, Metro Honor Band tryouts, Metro Honor Jazz Band tryouts, Metro Honor Orchestra tryouts, and OMEA All State Tryouts.
•Each year, middle school and high school band students are given the opportunity to audition for a position in the Middle School and High School Metro Honor Band, High School Metro Honor Orchestra, and Metro Honor Jazz Bands. These ensembles are comprised of the finest musicians in Tulsa Public Schools. The tryouts consist of the performance of selected etudes as well as scales and sight-reading. From this audition, judges select the very top students in Tulsa to perform in these ensembles.
