English Language Arts Grades 6-12

Explore some ways to

include poetry all year long,
make it a daily routine like this teacher in Pennsylvania,
and focus on it even more in April.

Watch this
great video about an idea for a warm-up exercise.  Ignore the fact that it is a math video and think about how you could use "My Favorite No" with any sort of warm-up you do with English students.

Teaching Writing

C&I is preparing a resource page to support teachers using Traits-Based Writing.

Preparing for Writing on the EOI
English II and English III Rubric

(Both tests use the same rubric.)
According to the OK SDE, we can expect these tests to be in the same format as in previous years.

Curriculum Maps and Assessments
Here you can find curriculum maps for individual 6-week units or for the entire year, pre-test and post-tests, planners and videos, answer documents, and other helpful items.

A new 2-point rubric is ready for all constructed responses.
...and now that we have a rubric, we might need to make changes to the presentation of some of the constructed responses.

Great ELA Resources
Here are some great resources for finding reading material...especially informational text.

ReadWorks.org
ReadWorks provides non-fiction and literary reading passages for grades K-8.  You must register to read the passages, but registration is free.  It also gives you full access.  When you look for a reading selection, you can search by Lexile, grade level, or skill.

NewsELA.com
Register in order to have full access.  An anchor in the upper right corner of the article denotes which standard is covered in the quiz connected with that reading.  When you find an article that you would like to use, most articles allow you to adjust the Lexile with a sliding scale on the right side of the screen.

TweenTribune.com
It's news for kids!  You probably already knew about this one, but here it is in a handy-dandy link!

OpposingViews.com
If you are ready to discuss some controversies, then check out the views of both sides.

TPS Virtual Library
Click on the link and login to find access to a whole host of resources, lots and lots of informational texts on every imaginable topic, many of them searchable by Lexile or even ADJUSTABLE by Lexile.  Some even provide the same texts in different languages.  Login info: username start password library.  (START at the LIBRARY.)  Peruse the resources  Ask your librarian for more help or email Ayn Grubb.
