Course Description

Russian III, IV, V

These courses offer further practice in speaking, listening, writing, and reading with emphasis on reading for information. Selected readings from Russian literature, cinema, and the information media will be used to further develop and expand Russian communication skills. Oratory and expository writing skills will be practiced and improved. Students will also connect to other academic subjects such as math, science, and language arts using their knowledge of Russian to access new information.

Russian II

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to incorporate complex sentence structures and prefixed verbs of motion in their language usage. Students will be able to converse and write on a wider range of topics using all verbal tenses and incorporating an awareness of Russian verbal aspect. The students will also connect to other academic subjects such as math, science, and language arts using their knowledge of Russian to access new information.

Russian I

This is an introductory course in Russian language. College level texts are used. The focus of the course is on learning and acquiring the necessary skills of communication in Russian: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The student will learn to read edited texts, write short original compositions, and converse with confidence within a limited vocabulary range. Upon completing the course, the student will be able to speak Russian so as to be understood by a Russian teacher or a native speaker accustomed to listening to foreigners. The students will also connect to other academic subjects such as math, science, and language arts using their knowledge of Russian to access new information.

AP Russian

This course focuses on the mastery of cultural and communicative language skills. It is intended for qualified students who are interested in completing studies comparable in content and in difficulty to a upper-intermediate or second- or this-year college level Russian language course. Teacher will use the Russian language modules on Russnet (www.russnet.or). Course modules are constructed along functional and topical lines, reflecting the current cultural and linguistic norms of spoken and written Russian, and address reading, writing, and listening skills directly and speaking skills through a teacher. Each module has a single starting point, but through test, audio, and video materials and exercises, each allows a progression through the full range of proficiency levels from novice-high to advanced. This course emphasizes the use of Russian for active communication. The course has the following objectives:
1. to develop the ability to understand spoken Russian in various context, 2. to develop a Russian vocabulary sufficient for reading newspaper and magazine articles, literary texts, and other non-technical writings without dependence on a dictionary, and 3. to develop the ability to express oneself in Russian, both orally and in writing, coherently, resourcefully, and with reasonable fluency and accuracy.
The student may earn college credit for successful scoring on the Advanced Placement Examination.

These courses are for the highly motivated and skilled student who wishes to participate in the International Baccalaureate program. Students may earn college credit for successful scoring on the International Baccalaureate Examination.
